Naval Submarine Base New London is the U.S. Navy’s primary submarine base. Because of this, it has been named “the Submarine Capitol of the World”, and “Home of the Submarine Force” by many people from all around the world. NSB New London is also one of the oldest Navy bases that is still in use today. The base is actually located in the Connecticut town on Groton, but it was named base New London because the headquarters and housing for the base were located in New London.
Originally founded in 1868, Naval Submarine Base New London started as a tiny speck of a base. It wasn’t until 1872, when federal funding finally came in, that the base actually started to grow. The base was not known as a submarine base until about 1916, when many US Submarines used the base as a homeport, and a place to rest, repair and resupply before returning to the front of the war effort. Submarines played a large role in both world wars, and Naval Submarine Base New London helped them out greatly.
