NAS Key West is primarily focused on national security. It monitors threats, and reports directly to the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, several federal agencies, allied forces, and even the National Guard. The base was built on December 15, 1940, but the Navy has had a presence in this area for much longer than that.
Naval Air Station Pensacola is often referred to as “The Cradle of Naval Aviation”. It is located just next to Warrington, Florida, which is just south of the Pensacola city limits. NAS Pensacola is the primary training station for Navy, Marine, Coast Guard and Naval Flight officers. NAS Pensacola is perhaps most famous for playing home to the legendary Blue Angels, the US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, and arguably the best pilots in the world.
NAS Whiting Field is a US Navy Base located in Santa Rosa County, near the town of Milton, Florida. It is one of the Navy’s primary pilot training centers, and it also provides training for the Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marine Corps pilots. It gets its name from Kenneth Whiting, a submarine commander who eventually worked his way up to Captain, and was awarded the Navy Cross, one of the Navy’s most prestigious awards. He also helped to convert an old Jupiter into the Navy’s first active aircraft carrier.
The Corry Station Naval Technical Training Center is located in Myrtle Grove, Florida. Corry Station is the US Navy’s primary base for information dominance, and is one of the major Military information centers in the US. Since its decommission as an active airfield in 1958, it’s earned quite a reputation as a premier intelligence base for the US Navy.
Naval Air Station Mayport is located in Duval County, Florida. It is a major US Navy Base, and is just adjacent to the town of Jacksonville. It contains Admiral David L Mcdonald Field, a mid-sized military airfield.
Originally commissioned in December 1942, NS Mayport has continued to grow in size and reputation. Today, it boasts the 3rd-largest naval fleet concentration in the United States. It has a very busy harbor, which is able to accommodate up to 34 large ships, and a good sized runway that is capable of launching almost any aircraft the Navy or Department of Defense has.
